Top Fin Betta Filter

If you searched for a Top Fin betta filter, you probably want to know which Top Fin model suits a betta and what to buy for it. The honest answer from Amazon is narrower than the search suggests. On 2026-10-18 we opened Top Fin listings and found refill cartridges for three filters, not the filter units themselves. This guide shows what those listings say, what a betta needs from any filter, and three small filters whose listings we also opened.
Quick answer
Amazon sells Top Fin refills: EF-S element cartridges, PF-S cartridges for the PF10 power filter, and CN-S refills for the CN10 corner filter. If you already own one of those filters, match the cartridge name to the model on your box. If you need a filter, the Aqueon QuietFlow Internal Filter, Extra Small is the one listing here that states both adjustable flow and a rating that reaches a 5-gallon tank.
What the Top Fin listings actually are
We searched Amazon for “top fin betta filter” and opened the Top Fin results that were not third-party. Every one was a cartridge or refill. The table below uses only what each page states, checked 2026-10-18.
| Listing | What the page says it is for | Count | Size and weight stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top Fin EF-S Element Filter Cartridges | Does not name a filter unit; the description field only repeats “Top Fin EF-S Filter Cartridge” | 6 | 5.08 x 3.43 x 2.64 inches, 2.4 ounces |
| Top Fin Silenstream PF-S Small Filter Cartridges | Refill for PF10 power filters; active carbon for odors, pigments and chlorine | 6 | 3.1 x 3.1 x 5.5 inches, 3.52 ounces |
| Top Fin CN-S Refill | Refill for the CN10 corner filter | 6 | 7.52 x 4.65 x 3.78 inches, 7 ounces |
The search results also showed an IF-S Retreat listing and several third-party cartridges. We did not open those. The EF-S listing is the one to be careful with: it never says which Top Fin filter it fits, so the cartridge name on your filter has to do the matching.

What a betta needs from any filter
Flow matters more than brand. The University of Illinois veterinary column prefers a low-flow filter so a betta’s delicate fins are not pulled by suction, and it advises a tank of 5 gallons or larger rather than a bowl. The UF/IFAS publication on Betta splendens says bettas prefer calm water and that heavy filtration may be harmful. The Aqueon betta care guide, a manufacturer source and therefore a claim, says bettas do not strictly need a filter but that one gives better water quality.
Use this checklist on any listing: does it state a tank-size rating, does it say the flow is adjustable, does it fit inside the tank, and what cartridge does it use. If the page leaves out flow, treat the flow as unknown.
Three small filters whose listings we opened
These are alternatives, not Top Fin products. All three listings were opened on 2026-10-18.
1. Aqueon QuietFlow Internal Filter with SmartClean, Extra Small
Specs (from the listing, checked 2026-10-18): the page says “quiet, adjustable flow internal filter” for aquariums up to 5 gallons; included item is the X-Small, 0 to 5 gallon filter; 3 inches long by 3.25 inches wide by 6.5 inches high, and it must fit completely inside the aquarium; weight 5.8 ounces; model 100549861; corded electric.
Pros: adjustable flow is stated; the rating reaches 5 gallons. Cons: the listing gives no gallons-per-hour figure.
Best for: a first filter in a 5-gallon betta tank. Skip if: your tank is larger than 5 gallons.

2. Tetra Whisper 27 GPH Internal Power Filter (up to 4 gallons)
Specs (from the listing, checked 2026-10-18): 27 gallons per hour; rated for 1 to 4 gallon aquariums; uses small Whisper BioBag cartridges; adjustable clip and suction cup; 120 volts.
Pros: a stated, low flow figure. Cons: the rating stops at 4 gallons, below the 5-gallon size the Illinois column suggests, and the listing does not say the flow can be turned down.
Best for: a small tank where you want a known flow number. Skip if: your tank is 5 gallons or more.

3. hygger Super Mini Aquarium Single Sponge Filter (0.5 to 5 gallons)
Specs (from the listing, checked 2026-10-18): rated for 0.5 to 5 gallon tanks; one filter, one spare sponge and one suction cup per pack; the page says it does not include an air pump or tubing; weight 1.58 ounces; package 3.8 x 3.2 x 1.8 inches.
Pros: no motor in the tank; sponge is rinsed in tank water. Cons: you must buy an air pump and tubing, and the listing gives no flow figure.
Best for: an owner who wants very gentle filtration. Skip if: you do not want a separate air pump.

Worked example: reading a flow rating
For example, the Tetra listing says its 27 gallons per hour cycles a 4-gallon aquarium more than 6 times per hour. The arithmetic checks out: 27 divided by 4 is 6.75. In a 5-gallon tank the same pump would turn the water over 5.4 times an hour (27 divided by 5), but the listing only rates it up to 4 gallons, so use that figure as arithmetic, not as a fit statement. The Aqueon listing gives no gallons-per-hour figure, so you cannot do this sum for it.
Which one to pick
- You own a PF10 or CN10: buy the matching Top Fin refill, and check the name on your box first.
- You own another Top Fin filter: look at the cartridge name on the filter. Only the listings above name specific fits.
- You need a new filter for a 5-gallon betta tank: the Aqueon Extra Small is the listing that states adjustable flow and a 5-gallon rating.
- You prefer sponge filtration: the hygger mini plus a separate air pump.

FAQ
Does Top Fin make a filter just for bettas?
The Amazon listings we opened do not say so. Under the Top Fin name we found refill cartridges for the EF-S, PF-S (PF10) and CN-S (CN10) filters, and the EF-S page does not state which filter unit it belongs to. Search results also showed third-party cartridge listings that name a “BF5 BETTAFLO” as compatible with Top Fin EF-S, but we only saw those titles and did not open them. Check the filter box or the maker before you buy.
Can I use a Top Fin cartridge in another brand of filter?
The listings only promise a fit with the models they name: PF-S for the PF10, CN-S for the CN10. None of them says it fits another brand. The Tetra Whisper 4i listing says it uses small Whisper BioBag cartridges, so Top Fin refills are not the match for it.
How often should I change a filter cartridge?
The sources disagree, so read the box for your exact filter. The Top Fin PF-S page says a six-pack lasts up to six months with regular changes, which works out to one cartridge a month. The Aqueon betta care guide says to change the cartridge at least once a month. Neither source is independent testing.
Does a betta need a filter at all?
Not strictly, according to the manufacturer guide we read, but it says a filter gives better water quality. The University of Illinois veterinary column prefers a low-flow filter for bettas. If you skip a filter you take on frequent water changes instead.
Is a strong filter bad for a betta?
The UF/IFAS betta publication says bettas prefer calm water and that heavy filtration may harm their welfare. The Illinois column says a low-flow filter protects delicate fins. That is why the alternatives below are picked for adjustable or very gentle flow, and why we say when a listing does not state flow.
