If you searched for API nitrate, you are probably deciding how to measure nitrate in a betta tank, or what to do when the number comes back high. API sells several products that touch nitrate, and they do different jobs. Two of them measure it, and two others remove it. On 2026-10-18 we searched Amazon for “api nitrate” and read the listings below. This buyer’s guide separates the tests from the removers, shows where a listing contradicts itself, and gives a simple routine.

Quick answer

To measure nitrate, buy the API Freshwater Master Test Kit (drop-by-drop color card) or the API 5-in-1 Test Strips (dip and read). To lower nitrate, the first tool is a partial water change. The API Nitra-Zorb pouch and the Seachem de*Nitrate resin are add-ons for filters, and neither fits a small betta tank without a canister filter or a media compartment.

Product Job Nitrate stated Checked
API Freshwater Master Test Kit Test Yes, one of 5 parameters 2026-10-18
API 5-in-1 Test Strips (100 count) Test Yes, with pH, nitrite, carbonate, hardness 2026-10-18
API Nitra-Zorb (size 6 pouch) Remove, filter media Removes ammonia, nitrite and nitrate 2026-10-18
Seachem de*Nitrate (1 L) Remove, filter media Removes nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, organics 2026-10-18

One search result is easy to misread: the API Nitrite Test Kit measures nitrite, the step before nitrate, not nitrate itself. We did not open that listing for this guide, so treat the name as the only fact.

Why nitrate matters

The UF/IFAS publication on ammonia in aquatic systems explains that bacteria convert fish-excreted ammonia into nitrite and then into “the much less toxic nitrate”. It says nitrate was long considered safe up to about 200 mg/L, that newer research suggests it may be more harmful, and that in closed systems with little water exchange it can build up above 250 mg/L. That publication covers aquaculture as well as hobby tanks, so its numbers are far above what a home tank should reach.

A PetMD article by a fish-practice veterinarian gives the hobby figure: most fish tolerate up to 20 mg/L, though some species are more sensitive. It recommends a partial water change of up to 50% when nitrate is high, a conditioner for tap water, and says live plants can help remove nitrate while decaying plant matter can release ammonia. The Aqueon betta care guide does not mention nitrate, but it does give a routine: change 10% weekly or 25% every two weeks in a filtered aquarium.

The four products

API Freshwater Master Test Kit (800 tests)

Specs (from the listing, checked 2026-10-18): 7 bottles of testing solution, 1 color card and 4 tubes with caps; 800 tests per kit; freshwater only; dimensions 9.13 x 3.5 x 4.65 inches; 1.15 pounds. The listing says to use it for weekly monitoring and when water or fish problems appear.

Listing conflict: the bullet lists 5 parameters (pH, high range pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate), while the product description says six.

Best for: a keeper who wants ammonia, nitrite and nitrate together. Skip if: you prefer dip strips. See our chart guide for this kit.

API 5-in-1 Test Strips (100 count)

Specs (from the listing, checked 2026-10-18): 100 strips; monitors pH, nitrite, nitrate, carbonate and general hardness in freshwater and saltwater; pH range 6.5 to 8.0; 1.76 ounces; model 33P. The bullets say to dip a strip into aquarium water and check the colors.

Best for: quick checks and beginners. Skip if: you need ammonia; this strip’s list does not include it.

API Nitra-Zorb, Size 6 Canister Filter Pouch

Specs (from the listing, checked 2026-10-18): one pre-dosed pouch; 5 x 1 x 9.5 inches; 8.2 ounces; manufacturer Mars Fishcare. The bullets say it removes ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, fits most canister filters, is for freshwater, and should be replaced every 2 months.

Best for: a larger tank with a canister filter. Skip if: your betta tank has a small internal or sponge filter; the pouch is sized for canisters.

Seachem de*Nitrate (1 L)

Specs (from the listing, checked 2026-10-18): 8 x 3.7 x 3.6 inches; 1.67 pounds; model 19249; for marine and freshwater. The bullets say it provides support for the biological filter and removes nitrates, nitrites, ammonia and organics.

Listing conflict: the weight line says 1.78 pounds in a bullet and 1.67 pounds in the spec table.

Best for: a filter with a media basket. Skip if: your tank is a few gallons; one liter is a lot of media for a betta tank.

A simple routine with numbers

A planning example, using our own arithmetic, not a source rule: assume a 5 gallon tank reading 40 mg/L nitrate on your test. A 50% change, as PetMD suggests for high nitrate, is 2.5 gallons. If the fresh water has no nitrate, the new reading should land near 20 mg/L, which is the figure PetMD gives as tolerated by most fish. If your tap water already contains nitrate, the result will be higher, so test the tap water once.

For regular upkeep, Aqueon’s filtered-tank schedule on 5 gallons is 0.5 gallons a week (10%) or 1.25 gallons every two weeks (25%). Test before the change, change the water, and test again later the same day. Add live plants only if you accept the ammonia risk when leaves decay. See our tank cleaning guide and ammonia test kit guide.

Frequently asked questions

What nitrate level is safe for a betta?

No source we opened gives a betta-specific number. PetMD says most fish tolerate up to 20 mg/L, with some species more sensitive.

Does the API test kit read nitrate?

The Master Test Kit and the 5-in-1 strips both list nitrate. The API Nitrite kit does not; it is for nitrite.

Do I need Nitra-Zorb or de*Nitrate for a betta tank?

Not necessarily. Water changes are the first tool in every source we read, and both products are filter media.

How often should I test?

Both API test listings say weekly, and when water or fish problems appear. For the strips, see our water quality test strip guide.
