A betta canister filter setup is the job of placing a sealed filter outside the tank, running its tubes in, priming it, and choosing media and a flow setting a betta can handle. This guide covers the setup in order, what the listings state for five small canister-type filters, and where the sources disagree. It is written for one betta in a tank of 5 to 10 gallons. Most of the setup is the same for any canister: rinse the media, place the body, route the tubing, prime, and then set the flow. The part that matters most for a betta is the flow setting, and the sources below say bettas prefer calm water.
Quick answer
For one betta in a 10-gallon or smaller tank, look for a small canister with adjustable flow, a spray bar or outlet you can point away from the fish, and media you can swap. Of the five filters below, four state adjustable flow. Three list a tank size of 10 gallons or less, one gives 5-15 gallons, and one gives no gallon figure in the bullets read. The listings also differ on whether the filter body sits outside the tank or hangs on the back. Check each listing before you buy.
What the listings state
I opened each listing once on 17 October 2026. Specs below come only from those pages. Figures are as the listing words them.
- Zoo Med Nano 10: “up to 10 gallons”, three-stage filtration, adjustable flow control, spray bar, and carbon and ceramic media included. The listing does not state a GPH figure in the text I read.
- hygger Hang-On-Back Canister, model HG366: max 79 GPH suggested for a tank of 10 gallons or less, adjustable inlet, three outlet options, dry-run protection, and a 0.22-gallon filter box.
- hygger External Hang-On-Back Canister (5W, 10 gallons or less): three-stage filtration, adjustable flow, oil skimmer, and a fixing clamp for glass up to 0.7 in (18 mm).
- FZONE Aquarium Filter Kit: up to 79 GPH from a USB pump (5 V / 1 A), a canister 7.87 in high and 3.94 in across, and a 1.2 L chamber.
- AQUASMITH Hang on Back Aquarium Filter: title says 5-15 gallons and 79 GPH, flow rate adjustable, bottom-mounted motor, and a one-year warranty.
Setup in order
These steps are general. For the exact priming method, follow the instructions in the box, because each listing describes its own parts.
- Rinse the media first. The Zoo Med listing includes carbon and ceramic media; the hygger listings include sponge, carbon, and ceramic balls. Rinse loose carbon in a bucket before you load it.
- Place the canister or filter body beside or outside the tank, as the listing shows. The hygger listings say the body stays outside the tank with only the inlet tube inside.
- Fit the inlet and outlet tubing. The FZONE kit includes 8 mm stainless lily pipes and 47.24 in tubing. The Zoo Med listing says its filter is easy for new users to prime.
- Prime the filter and check for leaks before you add the fish. Fill the canister with water first if the instructions say so.
- Set the flow. Start at the lowest setting the filter allows, watch the fish for a few hours, and raise the flow only if the water stays clear and the fish are not pushed around.
Why flow matters for a betta
The University of Florida IFAS publication on betta care says bettas prefer calm water, and that heavy filtration may be harmful to a betta’s health and welfare. The same publication says water quality depends on management and husbandry, not just on the size of the container. So the goal is gentle, clean water, not the highest GPH on the box.
Worked example: a 10-gallon tank
Take a 10-gallon tank and a filter rated at 79 GPH, which is the maximum on the FZONE and AQUASMITH listings. Dividing 79 by 10 gives about 7.9 full water turnovers per hour at the pump’s maximum. In a 5-gallon tank the same pump gives about 15.8 turnovers per hour. These numbers are arithmetic from the listings, not a welfare rule. Because both listings say the flow is adjustable, you can run the filter below its maximum, and that is the setting to test.
Roundup: five small canister-type filters
All five listings use the word canister in the title. The two hygger listings describe a hang-on-back filter body outside the tank, so treat the word canister there as a title, not a construction description.

Zoo Med Nano 10 External Canister Filter
Best for: a 10-gallon or smaller tank where you want a canister with a spray bar and media you can change.
Skip if: you need a GPH number. The listing text I read does not state one. One customer review on this listing says the flow was too strong for a betta; that is one reviewer’s experience, not a listing claim, so test the flow yourself.
Listing specs: 11.3 x 4.8 x 5.8 in, 2.01 lb, model 976599, manufacturer Zoo Med Laboratories. Checked 17 October 2026. Zoo Med Nano 10 on Amazon.
hygger Hang-On-Back Aquarium Canister Filter, 4-Stage (HG366)

hygger External Hang-On-Back Canister Filter (5W)

FZONE Aquarium Filter Kit, 79 GPH External Canister
Best for: a nano tank or small planted tank where a compact, stainless canister fits.

Mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by the highest GPH. The sources I opened point to calm water, and the listings describe flow as adjustable.
- Assuming “canister” means the body sits inside a cabinet. Two of the listings describe a hang-on-back body.
- Skipping the priming step. Several listings say priming is part of the setup; check for leaks before you add the fish.
- Running a filter with no spare media on hand. Keep a spare sponge or pad so you can clean without stopping the filter for long.
Who should skip a canister filter
This guide covers canister-type filters only. For a bowl, use a tank instead; this site does not recommend bowls.
FAQ
Does the listing state adjustable flow for every filter?
No. The Zoo Med listing states adjustable flow control in its description, the hygger listings state adjustable flow or an adjustable outlet, and the AQUASMITH listing states adjustable flow rate. The FZONE bullets I read do not state adjustable flow.
What does 79 GPH mean on a filter listing?
It is the pump’s rated flow in gallons per hour, as the listing states it. The hygger listing calls 79 GPH a maximum suggested for tanks of 10 gallons or less. Use the number to compare filters, then check the adjustable flow setting.
Is a hang-on-back filter the same as a canister?
Not by construction. The two hygger listings say “canister” in the title but describe a filter body that hangs on the back of the tank. Read the description before you buy.
Can I replace the media that comes with the filter?
Yes, in the listings I read. The Zoo Med listing says its canister includes mechanical sponge, bio ceramic, and carbon media, and the hygger listings include sponge, carbon, and ceramic balls.
Should a betta tank have a filter at all?
The University of Illinois veterinary column on bettas recommends a tank of 5 gallons or more, and says bettas should not live in bowls. This site follows that rule, so a filter goes in a tank, not a bowl.
Where do I check the current price and stock?
Check the current price on Amazon. This article does not show prices, star ratings, or review counts.
